Girl by Jamaica Kincaid is a realistic depiction of an everyday girl. It deals with Mother-Daughter relationship. One can easily relate with the protagonist of the short story. Even though it has only 650 words, Kincaid succeeded in communicating the restrictions and regulations a girl came across in her everyday life. The paradoxical element in the short story is that the person who gives all these regulations is her mother. She (the mother) tries to bring out a lady out of the girl. But it sounds so ridiculous. In this short story, the protagonist is doubly colonised . As a citizen of Antigua, she is colonised by the English people, and as a girl, she is marginalised from the mainstream society. She is kept aside from the first hand experiences in the community.
